ASSOCIATED STUDENT GOVERNMENT

The student body of Otero Junior College is represented by an Associated Student Government (ASG), presided over by the student body president. The ASG considers and makes recommendations regarding student affairs and the disbursement of student activity fees. The ASG is responsible for working with the Director of the Student Center and/or those others responsible for the supervision of activities in coordinating and promoting student activities. ASG promotes activities for the entire student body attending Otero Junior College.

AIM FOR HIGHER EDUCATION

The AIM (Accessing Innovative Measures) for Higher Retention grant is dedicated to improving OJC’s low retention rates which will lead to improved graduation and transfer rates, along with higher GPAs. The grant award is funded by the Department of Education’s Title V Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions program (DHSI). Otero Junior College is designated a Hispanic Serving Institution since 2001, with over 38% of the College’s student population being of Hispanic descent. In addition to addressing the readiness and success of Hispanic students, the grant’s focus will also address the needs of low income students. Determination of low-income is based on Pell Grant eligibility and other financial aid qualifications. Over 55% of OJC students are Pell Grant eligible, with 84% qualifying for some kind of financial aid assistance.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS ORGANIZATION

Membership into the International Relations Organization (IRO) is open to all students. Student who join IRO are interested in learning more about different cultures, meeting international people and visiting various countries. OJC embraces and celebrates the cultural diversity that international students bring to the campus as their influence and interaction with the campus community enriches learning and campus life for everyone. IRO members work closely with the advisor to coordinate a number of intercultural activities on campus and throughout the area. IRO's mission is to facilitate interaction and promote the growth of understanding and acceptance between people from different cultural traditions and the community as a whole. We also are there to support and encourage each other as we learn and adjust to the people and cultures around us.

NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENT ORGANIZATION

 

The Non-Traditional Students Organization’s mission is to encourage, support, and respond to the unique needs and responsibilities of all non-traditional students contributing to the successful completion of their educational goals. Membership is open to any non-traditional student (i.e. returning, married, parenting, career change, and transitional).

PHI THETA KAPPA

Phi Theta Kappa is the only honors society for students attending two-year colleges. Phi Theta Kappa provides tools and resources for students to achieve success in scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship. Membership in Phi Theta Kappa allows students the opportunity to apply for $37 million in scholarships, receive assistance in transferring to 4-year colleges, and opportunities to travel and see speakers such as John Legend, Malcolm Gladwell, and Michio Kaku. The Delta Rho chapter at Otero Junior College extends membership invitations to students who are currently enrolled at Otero Junior college, and have a 3.25 GPA.

PRESIDENT'S LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

The mission of the President’s Leadership Program (PLP) is to develop and train emerging leaders at Otero Junior College through a one- or two-year academic leadership program. The objective of PLP is to provide academic, experiential and service learning programs designed to foster and cultivate leaders who are: ethical, visionary, critical and innovative thinkers, committed to action, empowering of others, rational and intuitive, open to possibilities and servants of the broader good. The program serves as a bridge between Otero Junior College and the greater community by continually developing partnerships with area leaders, businesses and community service organizations.  The program is limited to scholars who are accepted into the President's Leadership Program through an application and competitive process.

TRIO STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

 

Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded TRiO Program under the U.S. Department of Education. The program is focused toward students who have one or more of the following factors: first-generation, low-income or disabled. The goal of the program is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants and help students make the transition from one level of higher education to the next.
